Celebrate Juneteenth in the ‘Lou

We want to lift up some STL events in honor of Juneteenth and pulled together a list of ideas below. May Monday June 19th be an opportunity to expand our minds, hearts & understanding toward a better and more inclusive world.

Grand Arts Center

Saturday, June 17 | 10 am – 2 pm

The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (CAM), the Pulitzer Arts Foundation, Grand Center Inc., National Blues Museum, STL Bucket List, and The Sheldon are excited to announce a special Juneteenth Family Day event. This free celebration will take place on June 17th, from 10am – 2pm in the Grand Center Arts District.

Juneteenth is a significant moment in American history and our Family Day event is designed to commemorate this important day while providing a fun-filled experience for the entire family. The event will feature food, art activities, live music, and interactive performances for all ages to enjoy.

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities throughout the day, including interactive performances by local artists and musicians, and engaging art projects provided around the District. The Juneteenth Family Day event will take place at Grand Center Arts District and is open to the public free of charge.

Shop Black Fest

Saturday, June 17 | 12 pm – 7 pm

Support Black entrepreneurs and celebrate Black culture at the Shop Black Fest. This shopping festival is featuring over 150 Black owned businesses. The event will also host vendors, food trucks, a DJ, live performances, empowering workshops, trainings, and more.

MOBot

Monday, June 19 | 9 am – 5 pm

Visitors can spend a restful and restorative day in the Garden and partake in special activities planned for the day, all included with Garden admission.

  • Chef Lavinia McCoy of Gourmet Soul will present a special cooking demonstration

  • The Garden will share an interpretive visitor guide highlighting significant contributions of African Americans to advance botanical science throughout history. The guide will also offer opportunities for onsite exploration at the Garden, self-reflection, nature journaling, and meditation.

  • Visitors are invited to explore the George Washington Carver Garden, dedicated to Missouri-native scientist Dr. George Washington Carver who greatly influenced 19th and 20th century agriculture and education.

  • Experts from the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House will be on site from 9 to 11:30 a.m. to highlight Black individuals who have made an impact in the field of entomology.

Honeycomb

Monday, June 19 | 10:30 am & 11:30 am

Honeycomb will be reading "The Juneteenth Story" at 10:30 & 11:30 on Monday the 19th. 

About the Book: 

With colorful illustrations and a timeline, this introductory history of Juneteenth for kids details the evolution of the holiday commemorating the date the enclaved people of Texas first learned of their freedom.
