Why We Need ‘Emotional Diversity’ at Work

As all things KMG, we customize our approach to meet clients’ needs. And this newsletter is no exception. We strive to customize our communication for the moment and reflect what is happening in the world. And right now, the news is heavy. So, in keeping with the theme of PRISM – a communication with heart – we will continue to keep all those hurting around the world in our hearts. And not become desensitized to these horrific headlines but rather awake to how we can do our part to effect positive change.

It is especially critical for marketers to be thoughtful in these times, or risk being perceived as tone deaf. I don’t know about you, but (as a lifelong Meyers-Briggs “F”!) I find it especially challenging to maintain a “business as usual” approach against a backdrop of national suffering and angst. How we show up for each other at work is always important and even more so during crisis. Which is partly why I found this piece, “Why We Need ‘Emotional Diversity' at Work” so beneficial. The good news: the latest research from Wharton (go Quakers!) is that expressing emotions in the workplace among teams results in their enhanced ability to solve problems and generate ideas.

For other ways we can maintain emotional health, check out my buddy Dr. Andrew Huberman’s podcast on sleep and dreams. Sleep (and specifically REM) is emerging as a secret weapon in our ability to regulate a whole host of things, including our emotions. Speaking of rest, I hope you can enjoy some down time this holiday weekend and hug those you love extra tight.

Fondly,
