TikTok Tips for the New User

I’m a savage, classy, bougie, ratchet. No, that’s not right. I’m a marketer. Savvy, curious and excited about how TikTok can transform brands’ ability to reach a wider audience in a meaningfully different way than on the other platforms. How you ask? If I only know 3 things when getting started on TikTok, what are they?

1. Editing is clunky; but doable with the right tricks.

We suggest doing your editing outside the app to make smooth transitions. Below are a few free apps that will make your life easier.

    1. BeeCut

    2. VideoShop

    3. Splice

When it comes to effects and filters you should follow these easy steps to feel like you have the slightest idea of what you are doing.

  1. Go to Create video from the menu bar.

  2. Tap Filter on the right of the Camera screen or Effect in the corner and select your favorite.

  3. Tap and hold the Record button to start filming.

  4. Hit the Checkmark button when done recording. You'll be brought to a Preview screen where you can add more effects and filters.

  5. Tap Next when you're done editing your TikTok to proceed to the Post screen.

2. Hashtags are key.

Stay current with trending challenges and add those hashtags to your video even in cases where it does not directly relate to your content. If you use relevant hashtags your views will increase immensely. That said, there’s not a lot of space so you have to be concise with your caption. Below are some evergreen hashtags that you should always include in your video caption.

#FYP and #ForYouPage

The For You page is the front page of TikTok and the landing place when users open the app. This is used when you want your video for all to see.

#TikTok

This hashtag should be used by everyone and for anything. It is a viral hashtag that has over 5 million views. It is generic and almost everyone uses it to gain better views.

#Explore and #ExplorePage

This is another viral hashtag that means you TikTok is on the For You Page for everyone to see it. This hashtag has over 7 million views! It is similar to #FYP.

3. Original Sound

One of the coolest perks of TikTok is the volume of original audio created by users for use by others on the app. Have you ever wondered where to go to get the wildly popular, cool and creative audio made by other creators? We wondered this too and struggled where to go to get answers. Look no further!

First things first, check your Discover page for trending sounds. Use these to get the most views and to be relevant. If you don’t find the sound you are looking for, then we have another solution for you! Follow these steps:

  1. Click the “+” sign at the bottom of your home page.

  2. Tap Sounds at the top.

  3. Search your song or sound.

Bonus Q: If I have Reels, do I need TikTok? The answer is - yep, you guessed - it depends. If you are trying to grow your IG audience, IG will reward you for creating and posting reels. But one sneaky workaround is if you’re investing in TikTok content, you can save your videos down and share them on IG in reels. As with all things social media and market competition, there may be a future crackdown on this inter-app sharing, but for now it is fair game.
